Eyes Wide Shut is an iconic film from 1999 starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman.
The film is about the elegant Dr. William Harford and his wife Alice who, at a Christmas party, observe each other from a distance when the host of the party flirts with Alice.
Dr. Hartford is thrust into a world of eroticism and sexuality as his wife recounts her fantasies.
He visits a pub where an old friend of his plays and the friend tells him that he usually plays blindfolded at exclusive swinger parties.
After a while, he gives Dr. Harford an address and the code to get into the swingers party.
But first he has to get a suit and a mask, which he does at a rental shop.
With a mask and coat, Dr. Harford makes his way to an estate outside New York where he is met by more or less scantily clad partygoers wearing masks. There, Dr. Hartford is warned by a masked woman to leave and is then turned away from the party. It all develops into a murder drama and William and Alice decide to live in reality and not escape to fictional or actual sexual adventures.
After Wide Eyes Shut, parties with capes and masks have become a popular theme in swinger circles worldwide, and many swinger clubs and private parties have had a Wide Eyes Shut theme.
